A Year Studying Abroad

As part of my bachelors degree, I got the opportunity to spend a year studying at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Here, I met some incredible people and learned some incredible things, and this experience truly gave me the confidence to travel on my own.

A black-headed gull bobbing about in the Åland Islands.

Whooper swans on their yearly migration.

A Long-Eared Owl! I forgot my keys one day and while I was throwing snowballs at my flatmates window (I ran out of data too...) I heard a flapping and saw this shape swoop past me. Following its trajectory, I saw that it had perched in a tree right outside my flat, in the middle of the courtyard. I gathered up my flatmates and we brought tea outside to drink while we sat and watched it (and photographed it). We even collected its pellet and dissected it at the university. It had eaten voles, what a surprise.

Who are you? These Roe deer are always slinking around in the woods.

Marsh Harrier searching for mice.

Siberian Jay of Lapland.

Fishing village in Northern Norway.

A Pygmy Owl. Small (really small), but an absolute menace. If you are a mouse, you better watch out. Truly a predator for the ages.

A fox! We undertook a trip with the university to sit in a hide in the middle of nowhere and watch for bears all night. It was great, and a mama bear with her three cubs appeared at midnight. Unfortunately it was at midnight, and so photos were a no-go. Still, they were incredible to watch and I did manage to photograph this fox in the morning.
